What is a pod?
A pod is a Standm group chat built around one specific player rather than a general room, capped at 15 members and shown only to fans who named that player.
The word describes a specific thing, not a style of chat. A pod is not a server, not a channel, and not a room you find by browsing a directory. It exists because one player has fans, and it holds only those fans.
What makes it a pod rather than a group chat
Three properties, all enforced by the app rather than by convention:

Rooms with no player tag stay open to everyone who follows the sport, which is what makes the tagged ones distinct. |
| Capped at 15 | Fifteen members, enforced at the database. The cap is the product. Past roughly that size a chat becomes a broadcast with an audience, and the thing a pod is for — being heard by people who care about the same player — stops happening. |
| Persistent | A pod does not dissolve when a match ends. It keeps its history and its members between tournaments, so the same people are there for the next one. It is a standing group, not an event thread. |
Why player-level and not sport-level
A room for tennis fans holds people with nothing in common beyond the sport. A room for people who named the same player holds people who will all be awake for the same match, angry about the same call, and glad about the same result. The narrower the shared thing, the less a conversation needs to be started.
Standm's own numbers show why that granularity matters: on a panel of 23 users, the favourite-player answers concentrate heavily rather than spreading evenly, with 11 of the 21 who named a player choosing Carlos Alcaraz. Fandom clusters. Pods are the shape that follows from that.
How someone ends up in one
- They name the players they follow when they join Standm.
- Standm surfaces pods built on those players, and matches them 1:1 with individual fans of the same players.
- They join a pod, or are invited into one by a link from someone already inside it.
Pods and DMs
Standm has both, and neither is the secondary one. A direct message is one fan and one fan. A pod is up to fifteen fans of one player. The same matching answers feed both.
